Over the years, we have had the opportunity to explore a variety of homeschool curriculums. Some of the changes were necessary; and others simply unfolded as we sought to meet the specific needs of our children.
I've shared what we've loved, and I've shared what we've tweaked, but today, I thought I'd share why we switched.
In this post, I'll share all about Generations Homeschool Curriculum, what I thought about it at first, why I changed my mind, and how it has transformed our homeschool experience.
If you’ve been searching for a Christian homeschool curriculum that integrates faith, learning, and family discipleship, this honest review may help you decide if Generations is right for your family.
How I Found Generations Curriculum
I discovered Generations through the Homeschool Summits they provide online. I love learning and growing as a homeschool mother, and I always found their summits so edifying and encouraging. I'd listen and learn and be inspired to disciple our children more and more in the truth of God's Word.
One of the perks of purchasing lifetime access to the summits was receiving a swag bag of freebies, including a hardcopy of one of their curriculums. I received my sample curriculum book and began learning about this new way to teach in my homeschool.
What Is Generations Homeschool Curriculum?
Generations Homeschool Curriculum is a Christ-centered, Bible-integrated program that covers history, science, reading, and more. Unlike other curriculums, it isn’t just about completing worksheets—it weaves God’s Word into every subject, helping children understand His story and their place in it.
My Initial Thoughts
In all honesty, I didn't jump in headfirst. I tried a few lessons from my curriculum sample then often went back to what I knew. It seemed too out there for me, too different. "Taking the Americas for Jesus" didn't look like the fun American history curriculums I had seen or used in the past. It was about missionaries and skipped over a lot of the "good" parts.
I decided to ease in instead with God's Big Story but soon after questioned why there were five levels worth of the Bible stories. Wasn't one year enough? We had already covered the Bible stories in books past, and by this point, I thought it was a bit redundant.
I was wrong.
Why I Wanted More
Somewhere along the line, I realized that my children didn't know as much about the Bible as I had hoped. Yes, we did a variety of devotionals and memorized scripture throughout the years, but the fullness of God's story wasn't as clear in their minds as I thought it was.
There was a day when we were discussing a parable or a miracle that Jesus performed, and they looked at me with blank faces. They had no idea.
We'd read missionary stories and character-building stories, but what we missed was the bigger picture, the impact that Christianity had on the people it reached. The "why" was not there, and as they got older, I saw how very important that was.
In all fairness, I'm not saying that we never talked about some of these things, and the truth is, they may have forgotten. There's a lot that gets lost from kinder through middle school, no matter how fun you make it.
I just didn't want to miss what was most important. And I felt such an urgency to do more before it was too late.
How We Started with Generations
We dove in with Generations Science by this point, and this is where I saw all that a Christ-centered homeschool curriculum could be. Instead of reading secular books through a Biblical perspective, we could actually study all the intricacies of this amazing world through the lens of scripture.
We could see how everything in creation points back to God. We could sing hymns of praise and recite prayers in the midst of our studies. We could also watch videos, do hands-on projects, and apply our learning in our everyday experiences.
I was hooked.
After science, we explored history, God's Big Story, and many of the read-alouds they publish on their site. I had no idea about the Christian classics and loved how familiar stories became even more meaningful with their Christian content restored.
In Heidi, for example, it was the actual POINT of the story. It's so sad that we've taken something so rich and watered it down into a cute tale, lacking substance and deeper meaning.
I was so excited to learn and began sharing what I was discovering on my YouTube channel.
Why We Switched to Generations Homeschool Curriculum
After a devastating turn of events, we lost our home and all of our belongings. We started our new homeschool with absolutely nothing. I had a student in high school, one in middle school, and one in elementary, and I needed something that would draw them all in and point them to what was truly most important.
I needed something that would provide clear structure and hands-on activities. I also needed something that was affordable and would make the most of the limited time we had together.
After shuffling through homeschool catalogs and looking through old reviews I had done, I finally knew what I needed to do. I needed to go back to Generations.
Why I Love Generations Homeschool Curriculum
When you live through crisis, you learn how valuable time is and you begin to truly undestand what is most important. When your children get older, you also begin to see the consequences to the choices you make, both good and bad, and you begin to see the fruit of your labors.
I didn't have time to waste. I knew that I needed to build back on a solid foundation, rooted in truth.
Here's why we chose Generations once again.
Generations is . . .
Christ-Centered: Jesus Christ is at the center of this curriculum. His love, His impact, His story is woven through the pages of each subject. Whether you are learning about science or economics, you can see His hand in it all. It truly transforms how we see the world and our place in it.
Meaningful: Without Christ, history is just a bunch of dates and lists of empires that have risen and fallen. It's dark and often demoralizing. Seeing God's hand in history, along with our own role in the history He is currently writing, brings so much meaning and relevance to our studies. Understanding history matters. Science matters. Economics matters. And it all matters because He is at the center of it all.
Engaging: Generations caters to a variety of learning styles, and it's something I can really appreciate. The workbooks offer options for monitoring comprehension, hands-on projects, and real-world applications that bring the learning to life. They also provide a schedule and grading section that can be used to track progress and understanding.
Affordable: It's affordable. When you have limited resources or need to keep things simple, it provides the means to provide a quality education at a reasonable price. We don't need a whole lot to engage in our studies; and yet, we are diving in deeper than ever before.
Ongoing Support: One of my favorite things about Generations is their continued online support. Whether it is a monthly webinar or a seasonal homeschool summit, I am constantly inspired and encouraged to continue growing and fighting the good fight. The topics I am teaching become more relevant to me so that I, in turn, can further inspire and encourage my children.
Final Reflections
We've been homeschooling for a long time now, but even then, I often feel like it's still not enough. There's still so much I want to explore with my growing children, so much I want to share with them.
When your children hit those teenage years, it becomes more and more real how fleeting the time truly is. I look back with such a fondness for all the memories we shared and created and still a longing to have done so much more.
Sometimes I wish I had found Generations much sooner. I wish I had understood the importance of the five levels of God's Big Story or the integrated missionary stories in the history studies. I wish I had read more Christian classics when the children were little.
But the truth is, I did the best with what I knew. And you will, too, Mama.
This homeschool journey is just as much about us as it is about our children. We are growing and shifting and being renewed just as much.
There are things I see now that I couldn't see then, and it is only by God's grace that I even see at all.
I am so grateful, so very grateful for this beautiful opportunity to homeschool and teach our children about God and His world . . . and their place in it.
I am grateful to have learned so much because of curriculums like Generations.
To those just beginning their homeschool journey or seeking a new possibility, I encourage you to "seek first the kingdom of God, and all else will be added unto you."
God is truly faithful to lead.
Many blessings always.
